This is a Whirlpool refrigerator evaporator. The evaporator is the large, winding piece on the rear of a refrigerator. When touched, these components are extremely hot. Refrigerant is propelled through these by the compressor. The extremely cold refrigerant, coupled with the high temperature of the evaporator tubes, cause a reaction that produces cold air when the refrigerant reaches the freezer or refrigerator area. If the evaporator is faulty, the refrigerator area may continue to remain at temperature, but the freezer portion will stop freezing. Cool temperatures may be maintained, but freezing levels will no longer be met. In some cases, the entire until may cease to produce low temperatures at all.
